In 2018 we celebrated 25 years of development of radar altimetry, and the progress achieved by this methodology in the fields of global and coastal oceanography, hydrology, geodesy and cryospheric sciences. Many symbolic major events have celebrated these developments, e.g., in Venice, Italy, the 15th (2006) and 20th (2012) years of progress and more recently, in 2018, in Ponta Delgada, Portugal, 25 Years of Progress in Radar Altimetry. On this latter occasion it was decided to collect contributions of scientists, engineers and managers involved in the worldwide altimetry community to depict the state of altimetry and propose recommendations for the altimetry of the future. This paper summarizes contributions and recommendations that were collected and...

Bringing physics to life at the submesoscale ArchiMer
Levy, Marina; Ferrari, Raffaele; Franks, Peter J. S.; Martin, Adrian P.; Riviere, Pascal.
A common dynamical paradigm is that turbulence in the upper ocean is dominated by three classes of motion: mesoscale geostrophic eddies, internal waves and microscale three-dimensional turbulence. Close to the ocean surface, however, a fourth class of turbulent motion is important: submesoscale frontal dynamics. These have a horizontal scale of O(1-10) km, a vertical scale of O(100) m, and a time scale of O(1) day. Here we review the physical-chemical- biological dynamics of submesoscale features, and discuss strategies for sampling them. Submesoscale fronts arise dynamically through nonlinear instabilities of the mesoscale currents. They are ephemeral, lasting only a few days after they are formed. Strong submesoscale vertical velocities can drive...

Do Sardinella aurita spawning seasons match local retention patterns in the Senegalese-Mauritanian upwelling region? ArchiMer
Mbaye, Baye Cheikh; Brochier, Timothee; Echevin, Vincent; Lazar, Alban; Levy, Marina; Mason, Evan; Gaye, Amadou Thierno; Machu, Eric.
Sardinella aurita is the most abundant small pelagic fish in the Senegalese-Mauritanian region. The success of its reproduction crucially depends on the local circulation as this determines whether larvae reach coastal nursery areas favorable to their survival or are dispersed into the open ocean. As a first step towards evaluating sardinella vulnerability to climate-driven hydrodynamical changes, this study aims at underpinning how transport pathways drive optimal spatial and seasonal patterns for sardinella reproduction. We have used two estimates of the Senegalese-Mauritanian coastal seasonal circulation simulated by two hydrodynamical model configurations that differ in their forcing and topography. Nursery areas are determined by evaluating coastal...

Global impact of tropical cyclones on primary production ArchiMer
Menkes, Christophe E.; Lengaigne, Matthieu; Levy, Marina; Ethe, Christian; Bopp, Laurent; Aumont, Olivier; Vincent, Emmanuel; Vialard, Jerome; Jullien, Swen.
In this paper, we explore the global responses of surface temperature, chlorophyll and primary production to tropical cyclones (TCs). Those ocean responses are first characterized from the statistical analysis of satellite data under ~1000 TCs over the 1998-2007 period. Besides the cold wake, the vast majority of TCs induce a weak chlorophyll response, with only ~10% of induced blooms exceeding 0.1 mg.m-3. The largest chlorophyll responses mostly occur within coastal regions, in contrast to the strongest cold wakes that generally occur farther offshore. To understand this decoupling, we analyze a coupled dynamical-biogeochemical oceanic simulation forced by realistic wind vortices applied along observed TC tracks. The simulation displays a realistic...

Impact of sub-mesoscale physics on production and subduction of phytoplankton in an oligotrophic regime ArchiMer
Levy, Marina; Klein, Patrice; Treguier, Anne-marie.
Using a protocol of numerical experiments where horizontal resolution is progressively increased, we show that small-scale (or sub-mesoscale) physics has a strong impact on both mesoscale physics and phytoplankton production/subduction.Mesoscale and sub-mesoscale physics result from the nonlinear equilibration of an unstable baroclinic jet. The biogeochemical context is oligotrophy. The explicitly resolved sub-mesoscales, at least smaller than one fifth of the internal Rossby radius of deformation, reinforce the mesoscale eddy field and contribute to double the primary production and phytoplankton subduction budgets. This enhancement is due to the reinforced mesoscale physics and is also achieved by the small-scale frontal dynamics. This sub-mesoscale...

Intraseasonal variability of nearshore productivity in the Northern Humboldt Current System: the role of coastal trapped waves ArchiMer
Echevin, Vincent; Albert, Aurelie; Levy, Marina; Graco, Michelle; Aumont, Olivier; Pietri, Alice; Garric, Gilles.
The impact of intraseasonal coastal-trapped waves on the nearshore Peru ecosystem is investigated using observations and a regional eddy-resolving physical-ecosystem coupled model. Model results show that intraseasonal variability over the period 2000–2006 represents about one fourth of the total surface chlorophyll variance and one third of the carbon export variance on the Peruvian shelf. Evidence is presented that subsurface nutrient and chlorophyll intraseasonal variability are mainly forced by the coastally trapped waves triggered by intraseasonal equatorial Kelvin waves reaching the south american coast, and propagate poleward along the Peru shore at a speed close to that of high order coastal trapped waves modes. The currents associated with the...

Physical control of interannual variations of the winter chlorophyll bloom in the northern Arabian Sea ArchiMer
Keerthi, Madhavan Girijakumari; Lengaigne, Matthieu; Levy, Marina; Vialard, Jerome; Parvathi, Vallivattathillam; De Boyer Montegut, Clement; Ethe, Christian; Aumont, Olivier; Suresh, Iyyappan; Akhil, Valiya Parambil; Muraleedharan, Pillathu Moolayil.
The northern Arabian Sea hosts a winter chlorophyll bloom, triggered by convective overturning in response to cold and dry northeasterly monsoon winds. Previous studies of interannual variations of this bloom only relied on a couple of years of data and reached no consensus on the associated processes. The current study aims at identifying these processes using both similar to 10 years of observations (including remotely sensed chlorophyll data and physical parameters derived from Argo data) and a 20-year-long coupled biophysical ocean model simulation. Despite discrepancies in the estimated bloom amplitude, the six different remotely sensed chlorophyll products analysed in this study display a good phase agreement at seasonal and interannual timescales....

Phytoplankton growth formulation in marine ecosystem models: Should we take into account photo-acclimation and variable stoichiometry in oligotrophic areas? ArchiMer
Ayata, S. -d.; Levy, Marina; Aumont, Olivier; Sciandra, Antoine; Sainte-marie, J.; Tagliabue, A.; Bernard, Olivier.
The aim of this study is to evaluate the consequences of accounting for variable Chl:C (chlorophyll:carbon) and C:N (carbon:nitrogen) ratios in the formulation of phytoplankton growth in biogeochemical models. We compare the qualitative behavior of a suite of phytoplankton growth formulations with increasing complexity: 1) a Redfield formulation (constant C:N ratio) without photo-acclimation (constant Chl:C ratio), 2) a Redfield formulation with diagnostic chlorophyll (variable and empirical Chl:C ratio), 3) a quota formulation (variable C:N ratio) with diagnostic chlorophyll, and 4) a quota formulation with prognostic chlorophyll (dynamic variable). These phytoplankton growth formulations are embedded in a simple marine ecosystem model in a 1D framework...
